ISO 22000 Food Safety Management

Meet retailer and regulator requirements for food safety across your supply chain, from primary production through to retail.

ISO 22000 is the international standard for Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS), applicable to any organisation in the food chain: growers, processors, manufacturers, packagers, transporters, and retailers. It combines general management-system requirements with HACCP-based (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) food safety principles.

South African food businesses increasingly need ISO 22000 (or retailer-specific GFSI-benchmarked schemes) to supply major retailers, and it works alongside local regulatory requirements enforced by the Department of Health and NRCS. A properly implemented FSMS gives you a defensible, documented system for preventing contamination and responding correctly when issues arise.

Andreas Burger Consulting builds ISO 22000 systems around your actual production process and hazard profile, integrating with existing food-safety practices rather than duplicating them.

How we work

Our implementation process

Hazard Analysis

We map your process flow and identify biological, chemical and physical hazards at every step.

Critical Control Points (CCPs)

We determine and document the control points and limits needed to keep those hazards in check.

FSMS Documentation

We build the food safety policy, prerequisite programmes (PRPs), and operational procedures your system needs.

Implementation & Training

We train your team on the controls, monitoring records, and corrective-action procedures.

Internal Audit & Certification Support

We run your internal audit and support you through the certification body's audit process.

FAQ

Common questions about ISO 22000 Food Safety Management

No. ISO 22000 incorporates HACCP principles but wraps them in a full management-system framework (policy, objectives, internal audit, management review, continual improvement), which HACCP alone does not require.

It varies by retailer: some accept ISO 22000, others require a GFSI-benchmarked scheme such as FSSC 22000 (which is built on ISO 22000 plus additional prerequisite-programme requirements). We'll help you confirm exactly what your target retailers or markets require before choosing a path.

South African regulations (enforced by the Department of Health and, for certain products, the NRCS) set the legal minimum. ISO 22000 gives you a management system that helps demonstrate and maintain that compliance systematically, alongside meeting commercial/retailer requirements.

No. ABC is not a Certification Body and does not issue certificates. We implement and prepare you for audit; independent accredited bodies certify. That separation, required under ISO/IEC 17021-1, protects the integrity of your certificate.
