Financing is a large part of why: the IFC and World Bank’s joint MSME Finance Gap study put the shortfall in financing available to small and medium enterprises in developing countries at US$5.2 trillion, a figure IFC has more recently updated to US$5.7 trillion. SMMEs are nonetheless the backbone of the economy, contributing an estimated 34% of South Africa’s GDP (Stats SA / BusinessTech reporting), and their resilience matters even more against a backdrop of subdued growth: the economy expanded just 1.9% in 2022 (Stats SA).
